{TOS Review} AIMS: Fabulous Fractions

Photobucket

Fabulous Fractions is a collection of hands-on experiences using manipulatives to develop an understanding of fractions and equivalences. It is recommended for grades 3-5 and is $21.95 (paperback) or $19.95 (E-book).  Included in my review package was a set of two of the "fractional transparencies." ($14.95 for a set of five)

There are 22 hands-on activities included in this 120 page book.  You can see a sample of the book on the AIMS website. Included in the sample is the table of contents and the first few pages of the book.

Description from the AIMS site:

Fabulous Fractions comes to the rescue to help students make sense of fractional concepts. This collection of hands-on experiences seeks to engage students by using manipulatives to develop concepts of fractions and equivalence.
Each learning experience in this book is designed to help build a concrete basis for thinking about fractions and operations. Many also explore applications to problem solving, geometry, and data display and analysis. Students will benefit as they develop a visual image of the actions that they are taking when working with fractions within an equation.

My thoughts

Because the book is geared toward a classroom setting, I would not purchase this for my homeschool. It’s difficult to tailor the group activities to meet the needs of my one child. However, this would be a great tool for teaching fractions in a co-op setting.
